Who better than Shawn Carter to give Geno Smith advice about brushing his shoulders off, and dealing with the critics and pundits who cover the NFL on a daily basis.
Geno Smith went through a serious 3 or 4 game rough patch while learning on the job as the starting quarterback for the New York Jets.
While Jay Z was out making videos with his wife, and landing Robinson Cano a mega-deal, Smith told the New York Post that his agent and confidant also helped him through some confidence issues.
“I talk to Jay a lot,” Smith told The Post. “He gave me some good advice. He told me to not take [criticism] personally. It’s not that people don’t like me. It’s not at me. It’s the position that I’m in. Just realize the position that I’m in comes with a lot of scrutiny. You can’t take it personally. You just have to live your daily life.”
Smith, who fired his agents following the NFL Draft, now feels he definitely made the right choice in choosing Roc Nation Sports to represent him going forward.
“It’s been great,” he said. “I think I made the absolute correct choice. Some of the best people I’ve met, great mentors from all areas. They treat me with so much class, my family and everyone. It was definitely a great move.”
Smith also chose to try and clear up any lingering misconceptions that Jay Z is only around to help him land marketing deals and endorsements.
“It’s not really about him helping me as far as marketing goes,” Smith said. “My play on the field gets me the things off the field.”
