Phil Davis laid an egg in his last fight and Glover Teixeira was dominated by champion Jon Jones in his previous bout. That makes this proposed UFC 179 fight even more interesting.
Brazil’s Combate News broke the news that Phil Davis and Glover Teixeira are in talks to be the co-main event for UFC 179 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The main event is currently set with featherweight champ Jose Aldo defending his title against Chad Mendes. Teixeira vs Davis would add a nice fight to the top of that PPV card.
Both fighters enter with a must-win tag upon them. The 205 lb division is stacked and every loss drops you years away from a title shot. Davis was one step away when he lost to ‘Rumble’ Johnson. He’ll need a convincing win here to even garner a fight with a top 5 guy in that division. A win would position him to fight Rashad Evans or Alexander Gustafsson sometime towards the end of 2014.
Teixeira was riding a 20 fight win streak heading into the ‘Bones’ Jones fight and the beatdown he received all but ended all of the momentum that streak generated. He’s a fighter that is now left in limbo; it’s hard to tell if the UFC regards him as a staple at the top of their rankings or a 6-10 type of guy.
