Just days away from the US Open Maria Sharapova has decided to fire coach Jimmy Connors after a first round loss to Sloane Stephens.
According to Sharapova’s agent, Max Eisenbud the relationship between the two was not jelling in the few weeks they worked together following Wimbledon.
Sharapova had hired Connors in mid-July after she parted ways with her longtime coach Thomas Hogstedt, following a second round loss at Wimbledon. The Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati had been their debut as a partnership, with the US Open soon to come, things appeared hopeful.
In Round one in Cincinnati Maria won the first set vs Stephens, 6-2, then proceeded to drop the rest of the match. The question now is why did Maria hire Connors in the first place?
She will enter the US Open with no coach for the time being.
