The Texas Longhorns are joining the current trend in college football and changing up their uniforms. No they arent breaking out highlighter orange jerseys, even though that would be great, but they are adding something to their helmet.
The new helmet decal will feature the players’ jersey number above the Longhorn this season. Texas has done this once before during a game against Texas A&M in 2009 but this look may be worn for the entire season instead of just one game. Head Coach Mack Brown says that he’ll let his team vote on whether to keep the helmet number decals for the entire season.
The change was made to honor the Longhorns 1963 undefeated championship team. That team secured the Longhorns’ first championship and took down the Roger Staubach-led Navy team in the Cotton Bowl. MAck Brown and his squad could use soem of the heart and toughness that the 1963 squad displayed because the Longhorns have been on a steady decline since Vince Young left campus.
Maybe the small change in uniform is enough to change the culture around their under achieving program as of late.
