This is a very unfortunate series of events.
According to the Associate Press in Beijing, a Chinese college student has committed suicide after losing more than $3,000 gambling on the World Cup. Lin (surname given only), a second-year student, reportedly jumped to his death from a seventh floor window of a building on his campus on Monday. A witness gave her side of the story to local media:
“I heard him say ‘do not force me’ and ‘give me two more days and I’ll return you the money. He talked on the phone for more than 10 minutes. I saw him hang up and stand up and then all in a sudden he just disappeared,” she said.
Lin was rushed to an emergency hospital in Panyu, located in the southern province of Guangdong, however, doctors there were not able to revive him.
A classmate of Lin’s stated that he lost over 20,000 yuan ($3,200) on several World Cup matches, though the report didn’t specify which teams he was rooting for.
Yet another Chinese death connected to this World Cup tournament. Who knew watching soccer could prove to be such a dangerous activity?
