Talk about being persistent.
During the recent Hardrock 100 trail race in Silverton, CO runner Adam Campbell and his pacer Aaron Heidt reached the highest point of the trail while in the middle of a thunderstorm. Unfortunately for the two, as they made their way through they were struck by lightning. Seriously. Brian Meltzer of the Competitor has the crazy story.
Campbell and Heidt said they immediately hit the ground when the lightning struck, screamed a few profanities, realized they were OK and ran as fast as they could off the peak. Campbell said the lightning blast fried his headlamp. Heidt said he felt a twinge of electricity hit the back of his head, but otherwise they two survived unscathed.
Amazingly, the two continued the race and Campbell finished an amazing third place just 12 hours after being struck by lightning. Something tells me that is an accomplishment the runners will never forget.
