Adam Schefter is reporting that Jim Harbaugh started to lose his team piece-by-piece, after he lied to Alex Smith about the 49ers pursuit of then free agent, Peyton Manning.
Coach Jim Harbaugh began to lose some of his San Francisco 49ers players when he was not honest with former quarterback Alex Smith about San Francisco’s pursuit of Peyton Manning in 2012, according to team sources, who expressed their belief to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
Smith, the man at the root of some of San Francisco’s issues, returns to San Francisco on Sunday with the Kansas City Chiefs for a matchup with the 49ers, who seem to be in a state of chaos just four games into this season.
According to the report, Smith went to Harbaugh like a man and ask him if he was pursuing Peyton Manning. Harbaugh reportedly lied to Alex Smith, despite flying to Duke University to watch and workout Manning.
As one team source told ESPN, “that was the first big sign to the players that they couldn’t trust Jim.”
It sounds like the same old excuse from 49ers players who simply may be tired of being treated a certain way. I find it hard to believe that players had a problem with Harbaugh pursuing the legend that is Peyton Manning, but no one stuck up for Smith after he lost his job to injury.
