Who can imagine a world without Dick Vitale calling a college basketball game? I don’t think anyone can.
Luckily for us, Vitale plans to commentate until he can’t no more. Vitale spoke to For The Win and told them that retirement is nowhere near his future.
“(This is) going to be my 36th year (on ESPN),” he said. “I told Dan Patrick earlier and I’m going to tell you: My goal is to be the first broadcaster in the history of broadcasting to work at a game when I’m 100 years old.
“I have 25 years. You better cheer for me to make that.”
But we can’t have a Vitale moment and not talk about his excitement for the return of College Basketball.
“I think the real story right now is can anyone challenge Kentucky. I didn’t go to Harvard, I’m not very bright, I can’t spell Harvard but i do know this mathematically: They have nine McDonald’s All-Americans. Nine. Most schools have one. You have nine.”
The players who are going to go to the NBA, he said, should be allowed to go. “That’s their dream,” he said. “Let them live their dream. But once you set foot on a college campus, once you agree to go, let’s have the baseball rule where you have to stay for three years. We don’t even get a chance to know the names of these kids because they’re gone before we even know them.”
Looks like we can expect some strong commentary from Vitale this season. Lets all hope for that 25+ years because College Basketball wont be the same without hearing some variation of “Baby” by Dick Vitale.
