One of the reasons Doc Rivers is such a media darling is because he gives candid answers and is able to stand behind them.
While speaking with reporters before his Clippers take on the Celtics in Boston tonight, Doc reflected on his Championship win with his former organization and what happened immediately after the buzzer.
“I never went into the locker room after the championship, which was the strangest thing,” he said Sunday before visiting the Celtics with his Los Angeles Clippers. “I don’t know why I didn’t. I walked into my office and I just sat there.”
“And it’s funny, when I see film of it now, I see my kids, which is underage drinking,” Rivers laughed. “I see them jumping around with the champagne, especially the youngest one (Spencer), I think he was like 11 with a bottle. Bad parenting. But I never went in (the locker room). I never was part of it. I don’t even know why. I couldn’t figure that one out.
“I was just enjoying it. I was actually with my wife and her mom and my mom, and I remember just sitting there. I don’t know. I just sat there.”
The most entertaining part of the piece is the fact that he say’s his biggest regret is not joining the team in the locker room.
Sure, he could have said that he wished he had kept a closer eye on his kids during the celebration, but Doc is just keeping it real.
He wishes he partied with his team AND his underage kids that night, but unfortunately was too caught up drinking in the moment.
“I don’t know if I was that emotional that night, though, when I think about it,” he said. “I actually told our guys, if I could do one thing over that night, I would have gone in the locker room.”
You can’t blame Doc for becoming a bit overwhelmed with the situation after the win. Plus, his kids turned out just fine. No harm, no foul.
