Former MLB star outfielder Minnie Minoso has passed away at the age of 89 years old on Sunday morning.
“His son said the family believes Minoso died from a heart condition he had suffered, but were awaiting autopsy results. He had a pacemaker,” per Ed Sherman of the Chicago Tribune. “Minosowas pronounced dead at 1:09 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.” Sherman also noted “his age was listed as 90, but there was some question about whether he really was born in 1922 instead of 1925 as he insisted.”
Minoso made his way to the MLB through the Negro Leagues and first began with the Cleveland Indians. He spent 17 seasons in the league with several teams, including the White Sox, Cleveland, Washington and St. Louis. He was also a 9-time All-Star.
“He was an extraordinary person,” his son Charlie Rice-Minoso said, per Sherman. “He made many contributions to baseball and to Chicago. He’ll be missed most by his family and closest friends.”
