A huge shot was just fired by a confident West Virginia Mountaineer. It’s the NCAA Tournament, you have to poke the bear just a little bit.
“I give them them their props,” West Virginia’s Daxter Miles Jr. said of No. 1 Kentucky, their unbeaten opponent in a Sweet 16 showdown Thursday night in the Midwest Regional. “Salute them to getting to 36-0. But tomorrow they’re gonna be 36-1.”
I don’t think Bob Huggins cares one bit about his player making such a statement, but it got Willie Cauley-Stein’s attention.
“That’s talk,” Kentucky center Willie Cauley-Stein said.
“If you’re playing against teams like UCLA, Kansas, or good teams, and you’re able to do what we did to ‘em without playing hard? Imagine what we do playing hard then if you don’t think we play hard.
“Now I’m kinda juiced, like this game’s gonna be really fun.
“Like they made it kinda personal now.
“It’s just gonna be one of them games. I’m telling you if you want to watch a good game, you’re gonna want to watch this game.”
Asked if West Virginia’s smack talk lights a fuse, Cauley-Stein said: “Absolutely.”
