Paige VanZant is only 21 years old but that didn’t stopped the UFC from choosing potential over production when it came to choosing a face of the women’s strawweight division.
The UFC came to the point where they needed to choose another female athlete for their Reebok partnership and instead of choosing then-UFC Champ Carla Esparza, who’s since lost her title, they chose the 21-year old VanZant . Many immediately pointed toward her looks, but since her introduction to the UFC Paige has kept the focus on her fighting skills. In an interview with Jacques Slade, Paige gives fans a look at what it took for her to reach the level that she’s at and talks about her dedication to the sport.
Paige won her second octagon match last night in impressive fashion against veteran Felice Herring. That goes a huge way towards establishing her as more than just a face outside of the octagon; it brings relevance to her as a fighter.
At only 21 she may not be ready to challenge for the title, Joanna Jedrzejczyk is a beast, but she can continue to make her mark in the division by taking down established veterans until she reaches that point.
The UFC looks like they knew what they were doing when choosing VanZant.
