The NBA is aware that they have a problem with tanking. In recent years, organizations like the 76ers and the Timberwolves have shown fans exactly what it looks like when a professional sports team truly does not want to win.
The reason being: the lottery. Many owners, and fans alike, fear their teams will become stuck in the mud as a perpetual 7th or 8th seed only to be bounced quickly and quietly in the playoffs. Therefore, they choose to lose as much as they can so that they may receive the highest possible chance at the first pick in the draft. A chosen method year after year, though some would argue it’s usefulness.
The New York Knicks are one of those teams that embrace the tank. Or, at least, they were right up until they went on this two game losing streak.
With Atlanta Hawks already focused on the playoffs, the New York Knicks bizarrely decided that NOW was the time to start a two-game winning streak.
Yes, with nothing to play for but lottery position the Knicks couldn’t help but bungle the very obvious need to throw the remaining games of the season and land the best possible chances for the number one overall pick.
Needless to say this has Knick fans up in arms, because God forbid they actually try and win a couple games. In reality though, its true – this will hurt them more then it will help.
They’re racing to the bottom (and are a game behind) against the ‘Wolves, who have just one game remaining against OKC. The Knicks, meanwhile, have another game against the Pistons which is much more of a toss up.
Its unfortunate but its the state of the NBA until they decide to change the system. Until then, fans will continue to be disgusted when their team decides to win after being terrible all season.
