You have to love rivalries in sports. They add so many different storylines and make it that much more intriguing when fans are following along and it really brings people in and make them feel like they are part of it.
As with most rivalries, there is plenty of trash talking back and forth between the players and that often just pours fuel on the fire between the teams.
There is no love loss between Clemson and South Carolina. The two programs play each other annually and battle each other every year for in state recruits, so it obviously gets chippy on the field and on the recruiting trail.
Recently Clemson starting quarterback Deshaun Watson made a comment about how Clemson would never lose to South Carolina as long as he is there and recent South Carolina signee Ulric Jones had something to say about that.
Watson doesn’t plan on ever losing to the Gamecocks, he told USA Today.
“My high school coach was a big Clemson fan and I told him, as long as I’m the starting quarterback here, I’m not going to lose to South Carolina. It’s a big rivalry. Who wouldn’t want to play in that game? It was a family decision. They put it on me, and it’s what I wanted to do. Of course people say I have a future down the road (to protect), but I live in the moment and that moment was then and I wanted to play.”
The great thing about trash talk like this is that eventually it will get resolved on the football field. Eventually we will find out if Mr. Jones does indeed do what he promises to do or we will find if Deshaun Watson holds up his end of the bargain and never loses to South Carolina.
