The University of Maryland and head coach Randy Edsall found their quarterback of the future today when they landed the commitment from one of the top quarterback recruits in the country in Dwayne Haskins.
Haskins chose to stay close to home and play for the Terps over a slew of offers from programs nationally, and he now gives Maryland a key piece of the puzzle to build around.
The blue-chip passer from Potomac (Md.) The Bullis School announced his verbal to the in-state program on Friday afternoon during a ceremony at his school. Haskins tells 247Sports he knew for sure Thursday evening.
“It’s the best place I can go to become a better man and quarterback,” Haskins said.
Edsall was very involved in Haskins’s recruitment.
Lead recruiter Chad Wilt is emerging as a coach to know on the trail.
Of course ace recruiter Mike Locksley played a major role in securing Haskins’s word as well.
In choosing Maryland over Rutgers and a national offer list that included Alabama, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Texas A&M, Haskins’s verbal moves the Terrapins up seven spots to No. 25 in the 247Sports Recruiting Rankings.
The buildup was real. Haskins has been to College Park at least a dozen times, multiple games, several junior days and one-on-ones with Locksley and the staff. It was a decision he didn’t take lightly, working through the process methodically and taking other visits, and in the end Haskins found the place where he could go to school while making his mark as the quarterback that takes the program to the next level.
“It felt like home,” Haskins said of all his trips to Maryland
The Terrapins appear to be right there on the cusp and Haskins could be the guy to get them there.
Haskins is one of the best quarterback recruits I’ve seen on film this year, and this is a huge recruiting win for Maryland and Edsall as they try to continue to build up the program after making the jump to the Big 10.
Haskins is a guy who could potentially be a program changer, and should definitely help on the recruiting trail going forward.
