Lane Kiffin’s name was kicked around last year for bigger coaching gigs, and now it seems like his name is heating up once again for coaching vacancies.
It is being reported that Kiffin interviewed at Maryland for the head coaching vacancy that was recently vacated by the fired Randy Edsall.
Here are the details from 247Sports:
Maryland has interviewed Alabama assistant Lane Kiffin for its head coach job, multiple sources told IMS.
Kiffin, in his second year as Alabama’s offense coordinator, has had three head coaching stints — for two years with the Oakland Raiders, one year at Tennessee and four years at Southern Cal. There, he went 10-2 in 2011, grabbing a preseason No. 1 ranking before disastrous 7-6 season. An established recruited who attracted top classes to USC in all three years at USC, Kiffin has become a polarizing figure because of his personality and frequent job changing.
“He’s a lightning rod,” the source said.
Maryland hiring Kiffin seems like a longshot, but multiple sources told IMS the Terps have spoken with him about the job.
I knew it wouldn’t take long to hear Kiffin’s name come back up for head coaching jobs, but who will actually pull the trigger on him him?
He has never been able to stay put at a job long term, and the way he was fired at USC is still pretty fresh in everyone’s mind. If I was Maryland he wouldn’t be among my top options, but he is an ace recruiter and that will be a plus for whoever decides to hire him next.
