Demaryius Thomas hasn’t had it easy. His mom was arrested when he was 11-years-old and today in The Players Tribune he recounted the details of when it happened:
“But I had this feeling.
“Mamma, something bad’s gonna happen.”
She told me everything would be OK.
A few months later … BOOM.
The loudest sound I ever heard. I was sleeping by the door when the men busted in. It was seven in the morning, right before school. The first thing I saw were the guns pointing at me. Big guns. Like in a movie. I didn’t know they were police. I just saw guns and red dots flashing. They told me to get down.”
Imagining what this would be like at 11-years-old is heartbreaking. A childhood that rough was either going to ruin his life or drive him. Most of the time it’s the former, but in this case, he prevailed. He lives to tell the story and hopefully if there are kids out there going through similar things, they can look at him and see there is still hope.
