Students from Buchanan High School in California are protesting the district-wide dress code set in 1975. The specifics of the dress code from BuzzFeed:
male haircuts may not fall below the mid-point of a standard stand up shirt collar and earlobes must be visible.” It also states that earrings are “not appropriate or acceptable” for male students.
What do you do when something is that ridiculous?
REBEL!
That’s exactly what they did, having petitions signed, taking to social media to clown the district, and eventually coming to what seems to be a verbal agreement with the teachers of their school to leave them alone.
The policy is still the same, but district spokesperson Kelly Avants says the students should feel free to express themselves. From The Bee:
“If a student has come to the administration, we’ll work with them to make sure that they have an environment on campus that allows them to express themselves with the gender in which they identify,” Avants said.
Buchanan High School students are getting a beautiful education, especially in this weird situation.
They are smart enough to see what’s going on around them and courageous enough to stand up for themselves and others. I bet if you talked to the majority of these kids, they would normally be ‘breaking the dress code’ or even have gender-identity issues, but they want others, who may feel the need to, be able to do so and express themselves and feel comfortable just like everyone else.
Shout out to Jaden Smith, he is out there wearing dresses too. It may look silly to you now and you may find yourself in old man mode, shaking your cane wondering what he’s is doing, but in 10 or 15 years clothes are just going to be clothes.
Which is how it should be, it’s just colorful rags people, let’s not get crazy. Plus, I bet dresses are comfy.
