What Roy Williams Should Do If UNC Wins National Championship

What should Roy Williams do if UNC wins it all?For majority of the season, the North Carolina Tar Heels were deemed as one of the favorites to cut down the nets in Houston. So, it comes as no surprise to see the Heels in the final four after defeating ACC rival Notre Dame to the tune of 88-74.

Now, as the Heels prepare for another familiar ACC opponent in Syracuse, the question of whether or not 65-year-old Roy Williams should retire is becoming more prevalent.

Ever since Williams left Kansas back in 2003, he’s won two National Championships to go along with four final four appearances.

However, Williams has been dealing with health issues for the past few years now.

Just this year, Williams passed out on the sidelines against Boston College.

Williams has endured multiple surgeries and he’s going to undergo knee surgery right after this season, which makes you wonder if it’s time for ‘ol Roy to hang it up?

Yes it is.

No matter what happens in Houston next week, this needs to be Roy’s last run for numerous of reasons.

First and foremost, his health.

Roy has nothing left to prove on the sidelines. He’s going to go down as one of the greatest coaches ever. Adding a third Natty next week would just be a cherry on top of an enormous coaching career.

Secondly, this current Heels team will be the best unit he’ll have in a while if he decides to stick around. North Carolina will be losing their two best players in Marcus Paige and Brice Johnson. Also, it’s not as if Roy has a great freshmen class rolling in.

Currently, UNC’s top rated commit is Tony Bradley, who is listed as the 21st best prospect, according to ESPN. After him, their next best prospect is Brandon Robinson, who is ranked at 55th.

Thirdly, the NCAA is still doing an ongoing investigation on UNC’s academic fraud, where former Heel Rashad McCants snitched on the basketball program. Depending on how that ends, the program could be hit with some serious sanctions.

Having said all of that, it’s best for Roy to get out while the going is good.
