This was a bit unexpected and the way the information came out was curious as well. The news comes from Golden Boy VP Eric Gomez.
Golden Boy was trying to make a fight between Canelo and Pacquiao this fall, but those talks fell through when they were informed Pacquiao had another fight lined up.
Here is what he had to say.
“We’re close to finalizing an opponent. We have a short list. We’re very close. We’ll be announcing it shortly but one of the guys we were interested in was (Manny) Pacquiao. We’d love to do a Pacquiao fight but from what we hear he has a deal to fight Adrien Broner,” Gomez told BoxingScene.com.
No matter if you love or hate Broner this would be a very interesting fight that would get a lot of media attention.
Bob Arum wouldn’t confirm or deny if Pacquiao would be fighting Broner in the future, but he did blast Gomez for putting that information out there while saying they never contacted Top Rank about a Pacquiao-Canelo fight.
