Khabib Nurmagomedov is done waiting for the UFC to hand him an opportunity and above that he is beyond waiting on Conor McGregor.
All reports have McGregor taking time off for the birth of his first child, which is due sometime in May, but Khabib knows that a fight with Conor is far from guaranteed.
McGregor has many options for his next fight. A trilogy fight against Nate Diaz is a sure big money fight, a chance to make more MMA history by challenging Tyron Woodley for the UFC welterweight title is also a possibility and the looming spectre of a GSP super fight is in the far distance.
Khabib is probably the least lucrative option for Conor and we’ve seen that cash rules everything around him.
Nurmagomedov is instead making the smart move by calling out the top contender in the lightweight division, Tony Ferguson. Ferguson is on a 9-fight winning streak and many feel deserves a shot at Conor before the oft-injured Khabib.
“I feel very bad about this because before this year I have two years rest because I have injured all the time. Now I don’t want [to be] waiting for this guy. If Conor don’t want fight before May/June, I want to take other fight. I want to fight for the interim belt with Tony Ferguson,” said Khabib.
Khabib ending Tony’s streak at a major PPV and calling out the ‘chicken’ (his words) McGregor once again may be enough to land him an out-right title fight.
