Ahead of Showtime Boxing’s Title Fight double header featuring Jesus Cuellar vs. Abner Mares for the WBA featherweight tile and Jermall Charlo vs. Julian Williams for the IBF junior middleweight title Hall of Fame trainer Freddy Roach (trainer of Jesus Cuellar) not only sang the praises of his champion pupil but provided some updates on his star student Senator Manny Pacquiao.
At a media roundtable, Roach said he believes Pacquiao will be meeting with Floyd Mayweather in the coming weeks to discuss a possible rematch. Mayweather raised eyebrows when he attended Pacquiao’s most recent title fight against Jessie Vargas, at the Senator’s request, and Roach believes a rematch is still not out of the question.
“I heard yesterday from Marvin [Somodio] that Manny is coming this week so that means something’s happening at least. Somebody’s going to be offered I think. Why else would he come to America?”
Mayweather was invited to the fight [against Jessie Vargas] by Manny and he did come and I heard they had a meeting about 5 in the morning. I wasn’t there so I don’t know if it was true or not. I know they supposedly had a meeting. So there’s a possibility that fight can happen. There’s always Canelo out there and I’m one of the few people in the world that will say I think Manny can beat him.”
