It was a day of highs and lows for D’Angelo Russell. After getting the news of his grandmother’s passing Sunday morning, the Lakers guard wasn’t sure if he would suit up for the night’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Nevertheless, Russell hit a buzzer beating 3-pointer to give the Lakers the 110-109 win and honor his grandmother in the process. Searching for his family in the stands, the guard was unable to locate them and was instead engulfed in a huge group hug from his teammates.
Russell, who finished with 16 points had this to say:
I just wanted to win. Win the game and winning shot, it’s just God putting the cherry on top. The win would have been good enough.
Russell’s grandmother held a special place in his heart. Coach Luke Walton said, “You could see how much love he had for her when he was speaking about it, which was kind of awesome to see.”
