Denver Post Reporter Apologizes Not For Racist Indy 500 Tweet, But For Pressing Send

A sportswriter for the Denver Post is finding himself on the receiving end of some backlash this week after making some poor social media choices this past Sunday after the conclusion of the Indy500.

Terry Frei was one of millions of IndyCar viewers who’d just witnessed Takuma Sato become the first Japanese driver to win the Indy500 in the race’s 101-year history. For some reason; after the race, Frei thought it would be a good idea to tweet this:

As you can imagine, the tweet did not go over well. To make matters even worse, Frei initially offered nothing more than a vague “I Apologize” in a follow-up tweet.

After the public clapbacks began to roll in, The Denver Post was forced to address the stupidity of one of it’s employees:

Apparently it took all of this to get Frei to issue a real apology (probably trying to keep his job rather than actually being sorry), though Sato wasn’t personally addressed until the tail end of his explanation:

UPDATE:

The Denver Post has fired Frei & issued the following statement:

We apologize for the disrespectful and unacceptable tweet that was sent our by one of our reporters. Terry Frei is no longer an employee of The Denver Post. It’s our policy not to comment further on personnel issues.

The tweet doesn’t represent what we believe nor what we stand for. We hope you will accept our profound apologies.
