Leon Balfour Jr., who is accused of throwing 68-year-old Nancy James, into a swimming pool during a pool party appeared before a judge Tuesday morning.
In a short video shot by an onlooker at the party, the clip shows
16-year-old Balfour surrounded by close to 15-20 teenagers as he is filmed dropping the 68-year-old woman to the ground. Before tossing her into the pool at an out of control pool party in Broward County, Florida.
The now viral video captures, Leon struggling to lift the unsuspecting elderly woman into the air but they both fall due to the slippery surroundings. Leon succeeds in his attempt to hush the woman, by launching her into the pool. James states her only purpose for going over to the party was to ask if they would quite down a bit, before she found herself at the bottom of the pool.
Reports state that the party attendance was around 200 teenagers. They all look on as Balfour, James and one of her two dogs are submerged into the pool.
According to WPLG, authorities state that the 16-year-old came to the Broward sheriff’s district office in North Lauderdale on Monday afternoon. Leon Balfour Jr. turned himself in after the video was posted on social media.
In an arrest report from the Broward County Sheriff’s office obtained by NBC News, Balfour says
“I messed up and I have to own up to it.”
The teen was given 21 days in juvenile detention, which he will serve at his home while wearing an ankle monitor. He also faces one count of battery on a person 65 years of age or older.
Residents of the community firmly state that the elderly woman was very sweet and kind. James is said to be doing just fine at this time, but was very frightened and upset during the incident. A friend of James told NBC 6 that Nancy had recently undergone hip surgery and had a stint inserted.
