A Bay Area teacher, arrested for allegedly assaulting a neo-Nazi member during a demonstration, argued in court that fighting fascism should not be considered a crime.
Yvette Felarca was arrested last month when she was caught on camera striking a neo-Nazi protestor in June 2016 during an anti-fascist demonstration held in Sacramento according to Huffington Post. Appearing to answer to the charges, Felarca told the court the charges are false and should be dropped.
“Standing up against fascism and the rise of Nazism and fascism in this country is not a crime,” she said. “We have the right to defend ourselves.”
Felarca’s next scheduled court date is Oct. 4.
