Why The Giants Have Reversed Course & Will Likely Fire Ben McAdoo on Monday

The New York Giants abysmal season continues today in Oakland, as the team will play the Raiders. They are 2-9 and headed for a top 3 pick in the 2018 draft. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported earlier today that despite the outcome of this afternoon’s game the Giants could fire head coach Ben McAdoo by Monday. This should come as no surprise to anyone following the team. McAdoo botched the Eli Manning benching situation earlier this week and has generated an overall poor level of communication both internally and externally. Giants owner John Mara is not pleased with the direction of the franchise and sees that it’s time to make a change.

The Giants have won two Super Bowls in 10 years but have failed to win a playoff game outside of those Super Bowl runs in ’08 and ’12. Mara thought he was making a move in the right direction by firing coach Tom Coughlin, who was at the helm of the afore mentioned Super Bowl runs. Things apparently looked good last year as the team went 11-5 and made the playoffs. But that masked a problem that has been festering all along and it covered up McAdoo’s lack of communication skills. When you’re winning nobody sees the warts. When you’re 2-9 everything becomes clear. McAdoo botched the Eli Manning benching, didn’t communicate properly with owner John Mara. He has also been a bit cantankerous with the media. Question is, why didn’t Mara and more importantly GM Jerry Reese see this during the hiring process?

Now the team is sinking, benched its 2X Super Bowl MVP quarterback, and doesn’t look like it has a roster that can make a playoff run anytime soon. The Giants are in full rebuild mode. Odds are they are going to clean house and get rid of the GM as well as McAdoo. Whatever they do, it behooves them to really take time and identify the right candidates for each position. Don’t settle for short term, quick fixes. Better to take time and identify the right person than to pick a known name to fill a void.
