It came as no surprise when it was revealed that star Kawhi Leonard wanted out of San Antonio.
Next comes a barrage of trade rumors and projections. A report suggests that the Cleveland Cavs have put in a call to the Spurs expressing their interest.
According to Terry Pluto of cleveland.com, Cleveland is one of several teams putting in calls in hopes of landing the star forward. With LeBron James possibly leaving the Land once again, bringing Kawhi in could entice the King to give it another go.
The problem the Cavs have is they don’t have the assets that others teams have. They could try to package Kevin Love and a 1st round pick this year, but that is a weak package in comparison to what other teams can offer. Also, there is no guarantee that Kawhi would agree to stay long term, so it likely could be a one and done situation. It is a long shot the Cavs are able to pull this off.
A drawback for the Cavs could be Leonard’s health as the team should still have a bad taste in their mouths after the Isaiah Thomas trade went south. Leonard played only 9 games this past season after exiting the 2017 Western Conference Finals with a major ankle sprain. A quad injury was the main culprit that kept him sidelined through almost all of the 2018 season so durability could be a deterrent.
