The battle between former friends and Cash Money labelmates Lil Wayne and Birdman looks like its finally coming to an end, legally. Per The Blast and Pitchfork, two lawsuits were settled by Wayne.
The first lawsuit was Wayne and his label Young Money against Cash Money, Birdman, Ronald “Slim” Williams, UMG Recordings, and Universal Music Group from May 2015. According to Pitchfork, these documents were dismissed on May 23, 2018. The Blast added that Universal paid $10 million to close the lawsuit.
The Blast also broke the news that Wayne is now finally out of his Cash Money contract. Universal is obligated to release Wayne’s long-awaited Tha Carter V album.
Wayne’s second lawsuit came against Universal Music Group, Inc. in March 2016. Wayne claimed that he was owed $40 million in damages from royalties he was supposed to earn from artists under his Young Money label such as Nicki Minaj, Drake and Tyga. This was dismissed on May 25, 2018. Pitchfork stated that the lawsuit “does not indicate a monetary settlement amount beyond each side agreeing to “bear its own costs and attorneys’ fees.”
Wayne and Birdman were seen hanging out at Club LIV in Miami back in March so it looked like the long-time relationship was going to be repaired. These lawsuits don’t indicate that now and things could never be the same again.
Tha Carter IV was released seven years ago and fans of one of the best rappers of all-time have been anticipating Tha Carter V since then. Since Wayne has finally gotten out of his Cash Money contract with Birdman, expect the project to be released sometime this summer or in the fall.
