A top Netflix executive resigned from his post after using racial slurs at employees on more than one occasion.
KTLA.com reports that Chief Communications Officer Jonathan Friedland resigned from his post at the streaming giant on Friday after using the n-word on multiple occasions. Following the first incident, public relations staff members expressed to Friedland directly that the use of the word was offensive. Unrepentant, Friedland used the epithet on a separate occasion when speaking to black employees in the Human Resources department. Still unwilling to accept responsibility, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings says he was forced to ask Friedland to leave.
Hastings made employees aware of Friedland’s resignation in a company-wide memo later obtained by Variety.com.
It recounts an incident that occurred “several months ago” when Friedland used a racial slur during a meeting with Netflix public relations staff during a discussion about “sensitive words.” Several people told him they were offended by his use of the full word, according to Hastings’s memo.
Friedland again used the word a few days later in front of two black employees in Netflix’s human resources department when they were speaking with him about the prior incident, Hastings said in the memo.
Friedland was a 7-year employee of the company.
