Instant Replay Allows France to Score Two Goals in 2-1 Win Over Australia at #WorldCup

The 2018 World Cup is underway in Russia and we’ve already had some incredible matches and we’ve only begun group play. Earlier on Saturday, France defeated Australia 2-1 and it was not without a mild form of controversy. This is the first time in a World Cup where Video Assistance Referee (VAR) and goal-line technology were used and the direct result was goals, in this case for France.

France’s first goal came from the penalty spot after the VAR decided Antoine Griezmann was brought down in the box by a Joshua Risdon tackle. The ref didn’t initially call a foul, but upon review, the foul was called and Griezman scored.

Australia was able to level the match at 1-1, but France striker Paul Progba blasted a shot that hit the crossbar and went straight down. It was unclear whether the entire ball had crossed the line for a goal. Again the officials went to replay and goal-line technology showed the ball did indeed cross. Check out the technology image below.

What’s a world-class sporting event without a little technology and instant replay?!
