Democrat Beto O’Rourke is from Texas and serves in the U.S. House of Representatives for Texas’ 16th district. He is making headlines for standing up for NFL players who have been kneeling during the national anthem prior to games in bringing awareness to racism and police brutality in our country.
O’Rourke spoke in front of a group of people and one man asked O’Rourke his thoughts regarding NFL players kneeling during the anthem and if he views it as disrespectful or not. O’Rourke’s responses were nothing but golden.
O’Rourke saluted all the service men and women but went on to say that there is nothing more American than to be able to protest peacefully in the way the NFL players are doing to bring awareness to these constant issues plaguing America. He doesn’t think the kneeling is disrespectful at all and this was welcomed with a roaring applause.
O’Rourke also mentioned the Civil Rights Movement and who fought to protest for these rights such as the Freedom Riders in the racist deep south in the 60s along with Martin Luther King Jr.’s nonviolent philosophy. He concluded by saying that unarmed black people in America continue to be shot in America and that taking a knee to address this is what being American is about.
