Here is why the remaining fight schedule for the month is critical for bigger fights down the road.
Jorge Cota vs Jermell Charlo
Jermell Charlo was scheduled for a rematch vs Tony Harrison, who beat him by controversial unanimous decision in December. The two fighters seem to harbor a personal dislike for each other, making the rematch exponentially more interest. This was halted when Harrison was forced to withdraw from this rematch after suffering an injury in training camp, leaving Charlo without an opponent. Jorge Cota quickly stepped in as a replacement.
Jorge Cota is 28-3 with 25 knockouts. He is 31 years old, stands 5’11” with a 73 ½” reach. Cota’s last fight was a split decision to Jeison Rosario on the Danny Garcia-Adrian Granados undercard in April. Cota’s other two losses came to Marco Antonio Rubio and Erickson Lubin. Jermell Charlo beat Erikson Lubin by first round knockout in October 2017).
Cota vs Charlo is taking place on June 23, 2019 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Jermall Charlo vs Brandon Adams
Unbeaten WBC Interim Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo will face Brandon Adams on Saturday, June 29, in his own backyard, at the NRG Arena in Houston, Texas.
Brandon Adams made a name for himself by winning the 2018 reboot of boxing reality tv show The Contender. Adams is currently ranked fifth in the middleweight division by the WBO and seventh by the WBA. Adams is 21-2, with 13 KOs and his most notable win versus Shane Mosley Jr. Adams is training with Dub Huntley and the great Freddie Roach, and believes that they are a winning combination.
Champion Jermall has several notable wins, including a unanimous decision over skilled boxer Austin Trout, a 5th round knockout of Julian (J-Rock) Williams, and a 2nd round knockout against Hugo Centeno Jr. Charlo is 28-0, with 21 knockouts and one of the few fighters who can knock a fighter out with his jab.
Jermall has repeatedly called out boxing great Canelo Alvarez and winning this match versus Adams in a convincing fashion may help add some validity to his request.
Charlo vs Adams will air on Showtime beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.
Demetrius Andrade vs Maciej Sulecki
WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade is on the short list of contenders for Canelo Alvarez in September of this year. Andrade is 27-0, with 17 KOs and is not a shy fighter. He has repeatedly verbalized his position that he was trying to solidify a fight versus Gennady Golovkin, who instead opted to fight the much lesser opponent, Steve Rolls.
Not only this, Andrade has been verbal about his opinion of the state of boxing as a whole. Andrade has been on record calling Jermell Charlo “sloppy”, has criticized Golovkin’s resume, saying that he hasn’t fought any top guys besides Canelo, and has called Spence “one dimensional”. So far, Andrade is a guy who talks a lot but seems to back it up.
On June 29, 2019 Andrade will fight mandatory challenger Maciej Sulecki.
Sulecki (28-1, 11 KO), has been super welterweight for much of his career, with notable wins versus Hugo Centeno Jr. and Jack Culcay. Sulecki moved up to 160 where he lost a decision versus Daniel Jacobs. He bounced back quickly, with a tko versus Jean Michel Hamilcaro and a unanimous decision win versus Gabriel Rosado making himself the mandatory challenger for Andrade.
Andrade is known for his incredible combinations, punches that come in flurries of 8 at a time. Will this be successful against Sulecki? The fight can be watched on DAZN on June 29.
