It’s been a long time coming, but the world of tennis might’ve finally stumbled on to their next star.
Over the past week or so all of the casual sports fans have been hearing rumblings about a new player at Wimbledon seemingly capturing everyone’s eye. First came the update that a 15 year-old had beaten Venus Williams. Venus unfortunately has been on the wrong side of results a few times over the last few years. Then she cruised to a straight sets victory in the next contest. Next came what might’ve been the launching point, a crazy come from behind win that gave us a retweet worthy moment with Coco beating her chest and the camera panning over to her mother who reciprocated the emotional display.
Unfortunately Coco’s heroic run came to an end at the hands of perennial contender Simona Halep on Monday morning.
For the casual fan that won’t tune in to every match on the Wimbledon schedule,or might not set those alarms for the late night French Open matches. The one thing that will give tennis an asterisk and make sure you remember to set the PVR is the potential to watch a rise to greatness.
Same reason golf breaks records when Tiger is in contention on Sundays, or when Serena is an underdog in a Championship match. We all just want to see the greatest athletes on the planet do their job better then anyone else can do it. Especially when we’ve seemingly watched these athletes grow up and become great right in front of us.
Let’s hope Wimbledon was just the start and that 20 years from now, we’ll still be talking about how we were there when Coco won her first few matches at Wimbledon.
