R. Kelly is currently battling charges for sex crimes in Minnesota, New York and his home state of Illinois. He’s still in jail without bail and will likely be locked up for a long time. These charges involve sex with minors and sex trafficking. He recently asked to be released due to health reasons such as anxiety and an untreated hernia but a judge denied that today.
According to Page Six, he has also supposedly been hiding money from his music royalties. The government is saying that he’s hiding these funds by putting them into a friend’s bank account.
“The government’s investigation has revealed that earlier this year, the defendant re-directed those royalties to the bank account of a childhood friend,” according to the feds. “Regardless of where those funds are being held, however, they belong to the defendant and, at any time, the defendant can redirect those funds — and future royalty proceeds earned — to an account in his name.’’
In March, Kelly supposedly had $350,000 in his bank account but was being drained due to child support payments to ex-wife, Andrea Kelly. He was soon put in jail for failing to pay the required $161,000 amount to her. He was soon bailed out and able to pay with donations received from a woman in Chicago.
Prosecutors also view Kelly has a flight risk but his lawyer says he surrendered his passports. They also feel that Kelly will intimidate witnesses. Kelly will still be locked up in Chicago. A trial date for his crimes still hasn’t been set.
