Going into the weekend, there were four title holders at 130: Andrew Cancio (WBA), Jamel Herring (WBO), Miguel Berchelt (WBC) and Tevin Farmer (IBF). Gervonta “Tank” Davis who was a top name at 130, decided to move up to 135 to face Yuriorkis Gamboa.
Things were shaken up a bit in the division by two men: Rene Alvarado and Leo Santa Cruz.
Rene Alvarado faced WBA titleholder Andrew Cancio and had a brilliant showing, leading the fight from the opening bell. The fight was ultimately stopped in the 7th round, when Alvarado threw a flurry of punches that Cancio had nothing for. And with that, Rene Alvarado became the WBA “regular” junior lightweight champion.
At the same time, Leo Santa Cruz moved up in weight to face Miguel Flores for a vacant WBA “super world” super featherweight title as the co-main event of the Wilder/Ortiz 2 fight. Santa Cruz came into the fight with a virus, rendering him less effective than usual, but still, outworked Flores and won a unanimous decision with official scorecards of 115-112, 117-110 and 117-110.
So now, there are titles held by five men ay 130: Jamel Herring, Miguel Berchelt, Tevin Farmer, Leo Santa Cruz and Rene Alvarado.
Where does that leave the super featherweight division? Jamel Herring beat Lamont Roach by unanimous decision and would be a good unification matchup for Rene Alvarado, if he is hoping to unify immediately.
Miguel Berchelt had an impressive KO over Jason Sosa, also earlier this month so he should be ready to get back in the ring in February or March of next year. Tevin Farmer hasn’t fought since July and is eager to get back in the ring with any of these men.
After his win, Leo Santa Cruz said that he wanted Gary Russell Jr. (who has made some derogatory comments to Santa Cruz about his father who is battling cancer saying “come see me before I got get your father”, adding a personal element to this matchup) who holds a title at 126 and Gervonta Tank Davis, who, in true Tank fashion, took to twitter to say that he would like a matchup with Santa Cruz.
Davis has to get through Yuriorkis Gamboa on December 28th, but if he does it seems to be a pretty easy fight to make because they are both rep by Al Haymon.
