When Andy Ruiz and Anthony Joshua met in June 1, 2019, Joshua came in the undefeated WBO, WBA and IBF champion and Andy Ruiz came in a late replacement and the 15-1 underdog.
But Andy Ruiz and Anthony Joshua quickly showed us that “expert opinions”, accolades, and betting odds mean little when two men step into the ring.
While the fight started slow and relatively uneventful, things changed drastically in the 3rd round, when Joshua knocked down Ruiz with an uppercut and left hook combination. But Ruiz brushed it off, got up and proceeded to dig deep and to continue to fight, knocking Joshua down a total of four times before the fight was ultimately stopped in the 7th round.
And just like that we had it. “A NEW!”. The first ever Mexican heavyweight champion. And one of the biggest upsets in the history of the sport.
There was a rematch clause which the Joshua team quickly triggered, and after negotiation, we got to where we are today. In anticipation of Andy Ruiz vs Anthony Joshua 2.
Will Anthony Joshua reemerge as the champion? Or will Andy Ruiz reaffirm that he is the better fighter?
There are two trains of thought.
