23-year-old Former WBO Super Welterweight Champion Jaime Munguia will make his middleweight debut on Saturday against Gary O’Sullivan.
Munguia, although only 23, has had 34 professional fights, with a record of 34-0, with 27 knockouts. He has had a spotlight on him since May 2018, when he dropped Sadam Ali 4 times before getting the stoppage in the 4th round. Since this time, Munguia has made 5 consecutive title defenses, although they haven’t all been easy.
After Munguia’s controversial majority decision win over Dennis Hogan, he switched trainers from Robert Alcazar to Hall of Famer Erik Morales and is now moving up from 154 to 160, looking to regain traction.
160 is a stacked division with names like Canelo Alvarez, Gennadiy Golovkin and Demetrius Andrade and Munguia is hoping to make a name for himself in the division.
Munguia is currently ranked #1 by the WBO and #3 by the WBC at 160, so a couple of impressive wins could earn Munguia a title shot.
But first he has to take care of business on Saturday. Irish orthodox fighter Gary O’Sullivan has a record of 30-3, with 21 knockouts. His three losses all come to formidable opponents: Chris Eubank Jr., David Lemieux and Billy Joe Sanders. He comes into this fight on a two-win streak and sees this as a huge opportunity to prove himself.
The fight takes place at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas and can be watched on DAZN with the main card starting at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time, 6:00 p.m. Pacific and the main event scheduled to start at 11:00 p.m. Eastern, 8:00 p.m. Pacific.
