R. Kelly Once Again Ask Judge to Release Him Due Several Inmates and Staffers Testing Positive for the Coronavirus; Explains Why He Isn’t a Flight Risk

R.Kelly and his lawyers are once again asking for the disgraced R&B singer to be released from prison following several inmates and staffers testing positive for COVID-19.

Kelly’s defense team filed an emergency motion seeking his release from the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago after six inmates and seven staff members tested positive for the virus.

Kelly is in jail awaiting his trial in July after being faced with several dozen counts of state and federal sexual misconduct charges in Illinois, Minnesota, and New York, from sexual assault to heading a racketeering scheme aimed at supplying him with girls.

The motion is claiming that he is in danger of contracting the deadly disease behind bars, and arguing that he would not be a flight risk because he is too recognizable.

Judge Ann Donnelly denied Kelly’s first motion for release last Tuesday, ruling that Kelly was deemed a flight risk. However, at the time, Donnelly noted in her decision that the MCC had no confirmed cases of COVID-19 at the jail.

Donnelly has also rescheduled Kelly’s racketeering trial in New York from July 7 to September 29, but both sides agreed it could be delayed again.
