NYC Mayor, Bill de Blasio, announced today that 17 correctional officers from Rikers Island Prison have bee disciplined due to the death of a transgender inmate that died in the prison last year. The victim Layleen Polanco, was arrested in April of 2019 for assaulting a cab driver and being in possession of a controlled substance.
Due to Polanco not being able to post bail, she was jailed, then put into solitary confinement for allegedly assaulting other inmates. We don’t know what happened, but Polanco was then found to be dead due to complications from epilepsy and the story from the COs wasn’t adding up.
A bizarre situation that didn’t have many facts and not even an ounce of conclusion, finally reached its end today.
This is an unfortunate situation, and we send prayers to Polanco’s family.
