Lupe Fiasco May have been kicked and pushed a few too many times. In a response to a twitter question posted by Hip Hop Hub, Lupe selected himself as the answer to the question “Who’s a better lyricist: Lupe Fiasco or Kendrick Lamar?”
Lupe has always been a strong lyricist who fits somewhere in the mold of a beta version of Andre 3000. However in terms of Kendrick Lamar level lyricism there really should only be one name mentioned as serious competition and that’s Eminem. The complexities and double and triple entendre Kdot has been dropping since “Lookout for Detox” has been mind-blowing. Once again this isn’t a slight towards Lupe, but he has to have a severe lack of self-awareness if he thinks he’s better than the same guy who gave us Control.
Lupe has been such an underrated artist for a very long time to mainstream rap listeners. He is a great lyricist who literally shares the same fan base as Kendrick for the most part. He’s easily in the top 10 lyricists of all-time conversation, but the conversation ultimately starts with Kendrick and Eminem and for rap heads that have always had their ears to the ground then it’s Big L and Black Thought. Regardless this debate isn’t going to just go away as there are plenty of Fiasco fans out there that would quickly point you to projects like ‘King Nas’ and ‘Dots and Lines’ as examples of the Chicago rapper’s superiority.
