Lauren Smith-Fields’ White Bumble date Mathew LaFountain through his lawyer Peter Karayiannis has denied any involvement in her sad death resulting from a fentanyl overdose.
The Daily Mail says that LaFountain ‘maintains his innocence and has been cooperating with police.
Matthew LaFountain, 37, has remained mum since Lauren Smith-Fields died more than six weeks ago, but his lawyer Peter Karayiannis offered brief remarks a day after the Bridgeport Police Department launched a criminal investigation into her death.
‘My client has been cooperating with the authorities since Day 1,’ Karayiannis told DailyMail.com in a phone interview.
He referenced the medical examiner’s report, which found that Smith-Fields’ death was an accident resulting from her exposure to a cocktail of drugs, including fentanyl, washed down with alcohol.
‘My client maintains his innocence,’ the attorney added. He also expressed his condolences to the woman’s family. Karayiannis said LaFountain has not been interviewed by detectives since the investigation was announced.
Earlier, a lawyer representing Smith-Field’s family hit out at the state medical examiner for ruling her death an accident before it has been determined who gave her the drugs that killed her.
Darnell Crosland argued that Smith-Fields did not use drugs of any kind, and said that her death looked ‘more like a manslaughter, if not a murder.’ He also called on the authorities to take a closer look at LaFountain, and urged them to follow the drugs.
‘We need to find out what happened,’ Crosland said in a phone interview with DailyMail.com on Wednesday. ‘Tell us what happened.’
It does seem odd that they would rule it an accidental overdose without knowing how she got the drugs and who helped her ingest them. Are they implying that LaFountain was there but didn’t see her using all these powerful drugs in front of him? He was just an innocent bystander who just happens to be around when a woman they say doesn’t use drugs overdosed on a cocktail of pretty powerful ones?
I guess it is possible, but it doesn’t seem probable.
Will we ever get answers? It doesn’t seem likely with how the cops are treating the investigation. The fact they haven’t interviewed him or obtained a warrant to check his house, his phone records, or anything says they want this case just to go away.
