People think it’s ridiculous for Charles Oakley to say that Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo would be nothing more than a bench player in his era. What do you think? Did he hit the nail right on its head? For me, it’s a bit unfair for Oakley to think that Giannis would be a mere bench player in his era. That is his opinion, but I think he needs to apologize to Giannis.
According to Total Pro Sports, Charles Oakley said the above when he appeared on the SLAM’s “No Pump Fakes” podcast.
During an appearance on SLAM’s “No Pump Fakes” podcast, the former Knick went out on a limb and claimed that Giannis would be nothing more than a bench player in his era. It’s a pretty ridiculous claim for the one-time all-star to be making about the two-time MVP and reigning NBA champions and Finals MVP, but that didn’t stop Oakley from making it:
The whole “he wouldn’t survive in our era” argument has been used time and time again by former NBA players, as if the league was the Wild Wild West back int he ’90s.
To say that Giannis would have never won any MVP award back then may be fair (although many would still argue against such a statement). But to suggest that an MVP-caliber player wouldn’t even be a bench player 20 years ago?
Giannis might actually been better in the 90s, where he wouldn’t have had to worry about the 3 point shot as much. You don’t think Giannis would be starting over Elden Campbell in the 90s because those were the type of centers that were starting back then. Dennis Rodman was a great power forward. He shot less than Ben Simmons.
Like all great players, Giannis would have been great in any era.
