WNBA Brittney Griner Could Spend Up to 5 Years in Russian Labor Camp

Earlier this year, Brittney Griner was arrested for drugs at a Russian airport and according to a recent report, she could spend five years in a Russian labor camp.

According to Peter Maggs of the University of Illinois College of Law said on Fox News, Russian officials could sentence Griner to “labor camp”. It doesn’t look like she would be freed anytime soon.

“You’re talking about five years, not jail time, but a labor camp. One thing I find a little worrisome is this extension of her preliminary holding from two months to three months, because you have to go to a higher authority to get it lengthened.”

Peter Maggs continues that:

“It is illegal to bring all sorts of drugs into the country [Russia], including cannabis oil.”

However, given that we still don’t know exactly what went down in the Brittney Griner case, Maggs warned about jumping to conclusions — given that the Russian government isn’t above planting some sort of drug on a known US athlete or figure.

“We don’t know what really happened,” he added.

If there is any good news it doesn’t seem like she is being tortured according to US Government.

U.S. consular officials were able to visit with WNBA star Brittney Griner in Russia for the first time Wednesday and reported that she was doing “well.”

“A U.S. consular official was able to verify that she is doing as well as can be expected,” U.S. State Department spokesperson Ned Price said Wednesday. “We’ll continue to work closely with her legal team and her broader network.”

Griner has been in custody since Feb. 17 on charges that she attempted to smuggle vape cartridges containing hashish oil into Russia. The U.S. State Department had said Russian officials were denying them access to Griner and two American men who are in custody, contrary to international-law requirements.
