The Freddie Freeman situation with his former agent Casey Close just keeps getting messier.
To catch everyone up, Close was fired as Freeman’s agent in late June after Freeman made a return to the Braves for the first time with the Dodgers after leading them to a World Series victory. It was a little shocking to most because it seemed like Close just did his job by getting Freeman a 6 year $163 million deal with the Dodgers because the Braves had only reportedly given him one offer.
After the return to Atlanta though, it was reported that the Braves gave Freeman the same offer as the Dodgers but close didn’t let him know about it because Freeman wanted to be back with the Braves but Close didn’t want him there.
Close denied those claims. But that didn’t matter because of social media and Doug Gottlieb who tweeted out that Close didn’t tell Freeman about the Braves deal. Freeman wasn’t happy about that and is now suing Gottlieb for libel according to the NY Post.
Close alleged that Gottlieb “defamed him and [his company] Excel Sports Management” when the radio host tweeted that Close “never told Freeman about the Braves final offer” before Freeman signed with the Dodgers in free agency. According to Gottlieb, Freeman’s alleged discovery of that offer spurred him to fire Close in June.
“There is no truth whatsoever to what Doug Gottlieb tweeted, and I would testify to that under oath,” Close said in a statement in late June. “We are currently evaluating all legal options in this matter.”
Gottlieb hasn’t responded to the lawsuit yet because he is out of the country while dealing with a divorce.
It is hard to prove defamation against the media they will have to prove that Gottlieb knowingly lied and had malicious intent.
