23-0 Ryan Garcia, pending contract negotiations, is scheduled to take on 28-0 Gervonta “Tank” Davis later this year in this year’s Super Fight. April 15th is marked as the day these two men lock it up inside the ring, and it’s left many fans unsure of whom to place their money on. So, TMZ Sports caught up with Canelo Alvarez at this year’s Super Bowl and asked for him to give his thoughts on the pending fight.
Alvarez has won multiple world championships in four weight classes from light middleweight to light heavyweight, including unified titles in three of those weight classes and lineal titles in two. While he’s expecting the fight to be a close bout, Alvarez stated that he’s throwing his hat in for Tank to pick up the W over Garcia, and improve to 29-0. His reason? Case and point, Davis has “got more experience”.
“It’s gonna be a good fight,” Alvarez said. He continued on to give his thoughts about Garcia, and emphasized his stance about the fighter needing to have more matches before he steps up to someone like Gervonta “Tank” Davis.
“He’s got a lot of talent, but I think he needs more fights before the Gervonta fight,” he said.
His point makes sense. Ryan Garcia may be undefeated officially, but his last fight was reportedly in July of last year. Even if one keeps up on their physical training, it doesn’t hold a candle to live combat. Whereas Tank has maintained his presence inside the ring, and even picking up a TKO victory over Hector Garcia last month in Washington D.C.
Oh, and if you’re thinking that Alvarez has a bias against Ryan over the issues they had in February 2022, know that Alvarez has openly denied any speculation on that front. According to him, his decision is strictly from a professional standpoint.
Tank is dealing with legal and physical issues, so the fight is still up in the air and may never happened, but we shall see.
