Philadelphia Eagles fans get a bad rep for being known as being arguably the worst fan base in the National Football League. This recent report only solidifies that general belief, and they only have themselves to blame for it. Whether they care about the negative buzz they’re generating for themselves is another matter entirely.
The Eagles suffered a heartbreaking 38-35 Super Bowl LVII loss to the Kansas City Chiefs after Eagles cornerback James Bradberry picked up a backbreaking Defensive Holding penalty on a crucial third down. The penalty came when Bradberry was attempting to cover Chiefs receiver Juju Smith-Schuster. The call gave the Chiefs a fresh set of down and gave them a chance to run the clock down and set up a game-winning field goal.
While Chiefs fans began to celebrate winning their 2nd Lombardi trophy in four years, Eagles fans began to raise hell in protest to how they lost. After the game, a video was posted to Twitter showing a handful of Eagles fans getting into a fight at a casino. But wait, there’s more.
Another video, posted by a different Twitter user, shows Eagles fans taking to the streets chanting “F–k the Chiefs” and hanging from light posts. It got so bad police had to deploy smoke bombs to get people to disperse and return to their homes, according to New York Post.
I’m not sure if this is something to be proud of, calling this a “Philly thing.” What’s more, this is very ironic, blaming NFL officials for dictating the outcome of a game. I remember when the Eagles were talking down on Saints fans after the 2018 NFC Championship, saying they had plenty of chances to win, and it should never have been left so close late in the game.
Eagles went into the game posting one of the best groups of pass rushers of the last decade and came away with zero sacks. They also had one of the better CB Duos this season in Bradberry and Slay. They let a hobbled Patrick Mahomes scramble on them for a big gain. In the end, the city of Philadelphia has now lost three major sporting events, all within six months.
