The Miami Hurricanes women’s basketball team saw its star players, Haley and Hanna Cavinder, at the center of the NCAA’s first NIL-related investigation. The Cavinder Twins were reportedly being investigated, along with their team booster John Ruiz, for alleged NIL infractions. Neither the twins nor Ruiz will suffer penalties in exchange for Hurricanes coach Katie Meier serving a three-game suspension.
“Dear ncaa, scared that female athletes have value? let’s hoop tho.. #GoCanes @CavinderHanna,” Haley said. Additionally, tweet also included a video with the twins along with the caption, “BFFR NCAA..”
For those who aren’t aware, the situation got started after the twins were announced to have then transferred from Fresno State to Miami following their Junior seasons last April. Haley and Hanna were said to have had dinner at Ruiz’s home whilst the twins were in the transfer portal–a meeting that Meier was found to be one responsible for orchestrating.
Multiple sanctions against the Miami women’s basketball team for improper contact and inducements were handed down from the NCAA as a result.
The implications made about the NCAA from Haley Cavinder’s response is a little interesting, and it’s sparked some polarizing responses down in the comments. Cash_Money_Cane (@cash_money_cane) alleges the NCAA has been conspiring against Miami since the 1980s.
“Please don’t do this. The NCAA has been out for Miami since the 80s. They have broken their own rules and made up rules to get us. Nothing good will come from further antagonizing them. Just move on.”
Whereas comments from people like Jon Swift (@JonSwiftUCF) believe they are just pulling the victim card to try to deflect blame.
“Yup, instead of being accountable for breaking rules, it’s best to pull the victim card and blame it on gender discrimination.”
