WWE Superstar Roman Reigns is closing in on 1,000 days as champion. An unprecedented title run that’ll go down as one of the best, if not THE best in today’s modern wrestling. Roman’s win over Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania, however, has been steadily drawing negative feedback from wrestling fans, and former wrestlers, alike. The former wrestler in question is WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle.
During his recent episode of The Kurt Angle Podcast, Kurt was of the opinion that Roman’s reign as Undisputed WWE Universal Champion has run its course. But he made sure to give Roman his flowers for the amazing job he’s done up to this point:
“I’m not going to beat up on Roman Reigns because he is the man he deserves to be,” said Kurt. “We’re in a time now where if you’re a champion for three years, that’s a little long. It’s just too long. Because we’re not in territories anymore. When you were in territories, you weren’t on TV every week. So fans had to come to see you at the arenas, and you’d only be in that city one day a week. So they only saw wrestling one day a week back then when they were champion for six, eight years. Now Roman Reigns has gone on; it looks like he’s gonna have to hold the title for another few years.”
Kurt continued to explain his point, highlighting how often Roman’s been seen on WWE television:
“The thing is, he’s on TV every week, sometimes twice a week, and then you know, a pay-per-view every month. It’s just a lot. I don’t believe the ratings are gonna go down, but I do believe some people are going to lose interest because they’re not making other wrestlers. You know, Roman has an opportunity to make a wrestler, he could have made Cody into a megastar, which Cody is already a star, but he would have been a mega-star if he won at WrestleMania. That’s just my opinion.”
It’s hard to disagree with his point-of-view; however, one can also argue that it would’ve been too soon for Cody Rhodes to take the titles off of him. Mainly because there are still plenty of storylines surrounding the bloodline that must finish, which can’t happen unless the titles are around Roman’s waist.
Kurt Angle has now weighed in on the end of WrestleMania 39 as he said on the most recent episode of his podcast that he believes Roman Reigns should have put over Cody Rhodes.
