Klay Thompson on Who His Dad and Former Lakers Mychal Thompson Will Be Rooting For

The NBA is getting a real treat in the Western Conference Semi-Finals. LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers are going to be taking on Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors managed to clear D’Aaron Fox and the Sacramento Kings, while the Lakers took care of business with Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies. Both teams are going into this series with a lot to prove. The Lakers were pretty much written off after starting the season 2-12, and Warriors are obviously looking to go back-to-back as NBA Finals Champions.

Plenty of proud parents will have their eyes on this matchup, rooting for their boys. Well, at least most of them will anyway. The same probably can’t be said for Klay Thompson and his dad. When asked about which team his father, Mychal Thompson, is going to root for, Klay kept it lighthearted:

“I don’t know. I really don’t,” Klay Thompson said. “If I had to guess, probably his employer. But I’m just excited. I have so many great memories with him watching the Lakers, watching Kobe, watching Shaq and Pau, and the rest of the gang. So I’m just really excited to try to stick it to the team that I grew up rooting for.”

Mychal Thompson is a former 1st overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft. He reportedly started out with the Portland Trail Blazers, but finished up his career by playing his last five seasons with the Lakers. His final seasons include playing in 1991, which was the last time both of these franchises played against one another. So, plenty of history at play here.

He won’t hold it against his old man if he decides to root for his old team, as Klay himself has highlighted the fact that he grew up as a Lakers fan. That said, got to imagine that Klay’s going to play with some extra motivation in this series. This is going to be fun.
